My dogs are on heart worm preventative and they are soon going to be out and I’m trying to find the the right heart worm preventative medicine. I don’t like that there isn’t one heart worm pill that takes care of the tapeworms AND the whipworms. There are only heart worm preventatives that prevent against one or the other…not both. My dogs go to the dog park almost everyday and despite all my efforts they drink after other dogs. I know whipworm is somewhat rare but I would like to prevent them from getting it. …so in addition to my heart worm preventative I need a preventative for either tapeworm or whipworm. All this preventative medicine makes me nervous because I don’t like chemicals and I have a hard time trusting companies and also I have a disease and some doctors think it is from vaccinations you get when you’re a baby. This is what makes me scared of chemicals, vaccinations, and medicines. I use and do all these preventative measures but I don’t like it.I vaccinate my dogs and give them heart worm preventatives but I (myself) don’t even get flu shots even though I get sick every year. I would like to hear from someone that doesn’t like chemicals if they think there would be long term side effects or if it would shorten my dog’s lifespan?

Added info: I read that dogs can get whipworm from drinking infected water and a lady at 1-800 ped meds told me they can get in the water when another dog drinks in your dog’s bowl. Is this true?

Also, I posted this here and not in the pet section because I need a better answer than “It’s just a dog.” or dogs take them all the time… etc. Please help if you can.

Earlier this year, our dog passed away at the age of TWENTY. He’d been on worm preventatives a very long time. No side effects.

And yes, all worms are easily transmitted between dogs.

Whipworm infestation?

Found out dog has whipworm wondering how it originates. I realize that it is spread through contaminated soil, but how does the soil get contaminated? Can whipworms be spread through meat or some other type of food. I am convinced that someone fed my dog something that had whipworms in it, what types of food are carriers of whipworm?
Here’s a few more things I should mention… I have had one of my dogs for 13years so I don’t think that the soil could have initially be contaminated, we have a fenced yard, no other dogs have been near it, and my dogs are basically isolated to it. There is no way that they have been in contact with another dogs poop, and what I am still most curious to know is that if someone fed the dog something could have that caused the infestation
we really never get rabbits and other small critters they don’t dare enter the yard

spread by infected feces. Your dog sniffed or inadvertantly ate a bit of infected feces.

Question by opinions2thoughts: How do I get rid of a whipworm infestation in my back yard?
My dog keeps getting whipworms. We give him Interceptor every month, but they keep coming back. Our backyard must be infested with them. Are there any chemicals that will kill them? I can move the dog temporarily if need be, but don’t want to have to dig up my whole back yard. Please help.

First thing is to be sure you’re actually getting rid of the whipworms in the dog. Whipworms are pretty resistant to treatment so the dog needs to be treated every few weeks for at least 2 or 3 treatments — and a fecal must be done a few days after each treatment to be sure they are gone.

Second: Whipworms are passed in fecal material and take about 1 month to mature in the environment before they can re-infect a new (or the same) host. A dog gets an infection from ingesting fecal material. This can be from eating stool, or from licking paws, playing with toys, etc. that might have fecal material on them. Thoroughly wash all of your dogs toys and be sure he isn’t eating any stool (gross as it is, some dogs will do this)

Third: To break the cycle, you’ll need to thoroughly clean your back yard of any stool. Once that is done, you need to pick up after your dog each time he goes, before the eggs in the stool have a chance to get into the environment. If you continue to do this for several months, you should be able to eliminate the infective stage.

My Boxer, who is on HeartGuardPlus, was diagnosed with whipworm (fecal exam) It was explained to me that they live in the earth and that is how the dog contracted them. My other Boxer, in the same yard, for the same amount of time, was given the wormer also. HGP does not want to pay for the second Boxers treatment as there was no fecal done. While HGP does not put it on their label, they say it prevents whipworms also.

Whipworms do live in the earth for 7 years. If one dog has it then it is very likely that the other dog has it as well. I would switch your dogs to interceptor. It’s the same price as HGP and it states on the label that it covers all the same parasites and includes whipworm. I’m not sure why HGP doesn’t list whipworms on it’s label, but if it’s not boasting about it then I wouldn’t assume that it does a good job with whipworms.

Whipworm Treament?

I am doing this three day collection of my dog’s feces to take to the vets for whipworm testing as he has the symptoms.
What is the treatment for whipworm? Pills? Shots?
If he is treated for whipworms do I need to take a day or two off to be home to take him outside constantly? Does the treatment cause frequent pooping?
I’d rather miss some pay and stay home than to come home to feces everywhere due to worming.
