Question by iujess84: My dog has 2 nickel-sized red circles with a dot in the middle on her stomach. Does anyone know what this is?
It looks as if someone took a car cigarrette lighter and burned two perfect circles on her stomach, only each circle has a red dot in the middle. I’ve been researching and I’m really confused. I think it might be ringworm but I’ve worked as a vet tech for a couple of years and ringworm in dogs usually are circular bald patches of hair, in humans it looks more like what my dog has right now (red circles). Lyme disease is not prevalent in my area (South Bend, Indiana), or at least thats what I’ve been told. I worked for a vet that never vaccinated for Lymes disease unless the dog was a completely outdoors in the woods kind of dog because she said its not really an issue here. My girl is a little Boston terrier and we definitely go to the park and on long walks, but she’s not outdoors most of the time or anything. I’ve just never seen something like this before. They are perfect outlines of circles. My other dog, an English Bulldog, had a really bad allergic reaction to something biting her a few days ago and her face swelled up and she got hives and I took her to the vet and she got a shot and some meds and now she is better. Is it possible for the same thing to have bitten this dog and she is having a different reaction to it? Also, I took all the dogs for a walk about a week ago down the East Race and they went swimming in the St. Joseph River, which a lot of people say is not the cleanest of rivers. Could that have anything to do with this?
How do I load a picture? I only have a cell phone to take a picture so it’s not the best quality but I have a picture.
I think I figured out how to put a picture on here.

Is this what animal rescue is all about?

Question by Launi~ Thundering ~ Wild Angels~: Is this what animal rescue is all about?
Received a call from a friend. His friend lives in a neighborhood where a foreclosed house has been ‘vacant’ for over 4 months.

There was a mixed breed dog chained outside. The neighbors fed, unchained her and put her in the small, fenced in ‘pen’. She was
full of fleas, so dirty it was disgusting, has heartworms and hookworms.

The dog has now been properly vetted, set up for heartworm treatment and is in a glorious home.

Problem is, there were 2 more animals inside.

All of this time the neighbors had called the SPCA and Animal Control.
The SPCA said there was nothing they could do if they could not get inside the house.

After making numerous phones calls I found out there were ‘tenants’ renting the house but were told to vacate by the owners months ago.

The tenants were going in at night through a door which was not locked.

They were apparently leaving some food and water because after 4 months the animals would have been dead.

When I finally reached the owners of the house they were shocked. They had no idea what was going on.

The owners met my husband and me at the house. The cat was inside and the little Pom was in the garage.

The cat and dog are completely dehydrated and emaciated. The house was full of cat feces and urine, the garage was covered with feces but no urine we could detect.

No food or water in sight for either animal.

The Pom and the cat are at my vet and will be evaluated. I will go from there.

They are out of hell.

So, I ask once again. Is this what rescue is all about?
Micki: I am a supporter and a foster home for my local SPCA. I also give generously. I am VERY well informed about what they can and cannot do. THAT is the reason I stepped in. Am I bragging? Seeing myself as a ‘hero’?
No. If you or anyone else thinks I am then I can just chalk it up to not knowing me. I know too many other people that do much more than I have and those people make me feel humbled.
Ms Manners and DeeDawg: You both know exactly what I am saying.
The beautiful Lab mix that was chained in the backyard has now been named Brandi Joy. The new owner just sent me pictures. My heart overflows.
There are times when ‘people’ have to step in and use all the resources they can to aid our under-staffed, over populated shelters.
Mccally: Oh, I have something for them also. I WISH I could have 5 minutes!!
UPDATE: Heard from my vet. The Pom is very young, probably under a year. Bloodwork came back excellent, no heartworms. Very friendly! They are keeping him until they can get him to a good weight and healthy.

The cat is also fine except she is in heat.
Once that is over she will be spayed. Got the word out now on both for homes.

Question by barrettjuanita: My large chow has ringworm what effective treatments are available to quickly remedy this problem?
My chow that is 10 years old recently had precancerous tumors removed at the humane society hospital. Shortly afterwards his hair started falling out and rings in his skin developed. The vets say he didn’t get it there (I question this) and that he probably had the problem for years before the actual eruptions occoured. Since then we have spent a fortune on different medicines, shampoos, etc. We have even began using Lamisil AT. He also has chronic ear infections and eye infections. It is bad enough that he has all these problems but now with the ringworm I am afraid that my other two dogs and two cats may also contract the disease. Years ago I treated my cat with pharmaldihide (a treatment I got from a turn of the century medical book) and just like the book said it treated the ringworm with the first application. However the area on my dog is too great to treat this way. Years ago my dad treated a dog with mange with used motor oil and that worked then but isn’t practical now.

you should talk to your vet, he can always recommend the best possible treatment, treating a dpg wotj romgwpr, requires extra caution as the disease can be spread to the humans.

Will you pray for this dog?

Question by feliciadaniel_s: Will you pray for this dog?
Anyone who’s been following this question knows what it’s about but for those of you who don’t.
I rescued a stray puppy this past Thursday. He was huddled underneath a bridge in the middle of a snowstorm. I took him to the vet Friday and he was diagnosed with hookworms, whipworms, slight hypothermia and parvo. He is an 8 month old puppy (pit/dalmation mix) and we have named him Sonny. The vet gave me 2 options: 1)take him home and give him medicine OR 2) leave him at the hospital and they would treat him and he would stand a better chance. I left him there with them. I have been asking people to pray for his recovery and I am so thankful for all the prayers.

This morning…well, actually about 30 minutes ago, I got a call from the hospital from one of the vets. He told me that Sonny had turned a corner. He was up in his cage and wagging his tail and moving around. The vet said he only threw up once last night but it wasn’t anything fresh. He said that he is going to give his stomach until about noon and if he can hold all his food down I can go and get him and bring him back home with us to start his new life. YES!!!! I have been so worried about him and actually hearing the words “turned a corner” & “take him home” just makes me so happy.

To be honest, I had actually driven by him a couple of times before stopping to get him. The first time I saw him at the top of a driveway for an apartment complex but I figured maybe he lives there because he turned and started walking back down towards them. The second time I passed him I saw him standing in a ditch in the middle of a web of limbs and whatnot. I drove for a few minutes and then told myself something was wrong and he was a stray or a dumpout. I turned around and drove back but I couldn’t find him. I drove a good ways in both directions and looked out my windows but I couldn’t find him. I was so mad because I knew I waited too long to turn around. Finally, I decided to turn onto this dirt road and park and get out. Turns out I parked on a bridge. Couldn’t tell it was a bridge because everything was so overgrown around it. I got out and went down the bank on one side and called but got no response. I started to get in the car and saw that there was another side so I went down the bank on the right and just happened to glance to my left and found him under the bridge huddled up next to the concrete. I called and he came to me.

Three times a charm I guess and now we get to keep him and give him a loving new life!!
Thanks you guys!! After I pick him up tomorrow (hopefully) I will post the same question which will tell you how he is settling in. And then after I have had him here a couple of days I will post this question again to give another update.
