Question by grumpyjen28: my pups are 7 weeks and they went to the vet yesterday and they got hookworms?
i have 2 chihuahua puppies. and they are almost 7 weeks old. i just learned yesterday they have hookworms. and i am mad about it. so now i am treating the mom and pups with a dewormer from vet. i can believe the mom would have cause she goes outside and all. well anyways i was planning on selling the pups but i am not sure if i am allowed to or not. when can i sell them and how long does it take to have the pups worm free and how would i know. i have never had my dogs have hookworms or any kind. but i was told by the vet its common especially in our area with all the wild animals.
i did deworm the pups starting at 3 weeks of age but not the mom. sorry to forget to mention. and i am not a puppy mill this is her first litter. just to let you know and she is fixed. thankyou

Answer by jules77 The puppies possibly got the hookworms from the mother. They can only get into the puppies orally, via the placenta before birth, via the mothers milk, or through the skin.
If there was a risk of hookworm, the puppies should have been treated at 2 – 3 weeks of age, but they will need treating again in 2 – 4 weeks anyway as some larvae may not have hatched and any treatment you are now giving them, will only kill the adult hookworm.
You will need to treat the mother too. I believe one hookworm can produce something like 20000 eggs in one day.
Sometimes a blood tranfusion is necessary as the hookworm will feed off the blood of the dog.
Once they are fully recovered and you have the all clear from the vet, which may be in 6 weeks or so, there is no reason why the puppies cannot go to a new home.

Question by Muffin: My dog has little flat white worms in her stool. What are they? Whipworms or Tapeworms?
We just got her 7 days ago. She is going to the vet tommorrow. She is also only 4 months. Please Help!!

Answer by fietsje14 Those would be tapeworm segments if they are about the size and shape of a grain of rice. You would not be able to see whipworms. A dewormer will rid her of those.

Answer by Phebie All puppies are born with roundworms, and I believe hookworms too. A vet will not treat a puppy for them until they are atleast 6 weeks old.
Question by Kibble is King of all Crap: Dogs who are raw-fed do they have problems with parasites?
Since raw-fed advocates actually admit that dogs shed parasites in their feces does that mean they really do have parasites in them? Isn’t that bad?
Best answer:
Answer by akitagrl07 I’ve never heard a raw feeder say their dog regularly “sheds parasites.” They do admit that their dog’s poo contains bacteria, but so does the poo of kibble-fed dogs. What I HAVE heard from them about parasites is that they actually have FEWER problems with them. Many, if not most, of the people on the Yahoo! raw feeding lists do not use HW prevention or flea and tick prevention and they very rarely have to treat for them. If they do have an infestation, it is cleared up with some food grade diatomaceous earth either on the dog or on the food.
