Question by karosyrup: What are the symptoms that a dog has a tape worm?
Her appetite has changed recently. For a few days, she had a much smaller appetite, and now she has a bigger appetite again. And I have been noticing some rice like stuff in her poop. And how hard is it to treat if she does have a tape worm?

The rice things in the poop is probably tapeworms. I bet if you look REALLY close, they move slightly. Classic symptom of tape worms. It’s easy to treat, just a visit to the vet, or if you already have a vet and your pet is otherwise healthy, you can just take a sample of the poop for them to examine. If they’re big enough that you can see them in the feces, they won’t need to do a fecal exam, they’ll just prescribe a pill for about and then do another in a few weeks. You’ll then have to have the dog tested to make sure they’re completely gone.

Your dog probably also has at least a mild case of fleas. Dogs get tapeworms when they eat a flea that is infected. No joke. You’ll need to get your dog on advantage of frontline also to prevent him from getting the worms again.

I have a 13 week old Shih Tzu puppy. We got him 9 days ago. He had his first shots on May 8 by the breeder’s vet. I just gave him his second shot last night. I bought the vaccine (Duramune Max 5 Cv-k) at a feed store. I had called our vet locally and they wanted $58 (to be seen and for the vaccine) so I thought I’d save some money and do it myself which I have done Several times with my dogs as well as my mom’s dogs. I have however, never had a small breed. I had read before hand not to give Lepto to small dogs or puppies, so I skipped that and thought this shot would be ok. Puppy has been fine up until a few hours ago when he vomited yellow liquid, no food in the vomit. He has seemed a little less energetic today, but not lethargic or anything. He is still cheerful, and playing, just a little more sleepy and not as crazy bouncy. He’s playing with a squeeky toy right now. Anyways, I freaked out thinking that maybe he is having a reaction to his vaccine. His stool is still normal, and he hasn’t vomited again. It has been a few hours since he vomited. I did start him on Pedialyte just to help him out a bit. I called our emergency vet and they wanted to see him/test him for Parvo at a cost of almost $300 so I decided to wait to see if he vomited again or got diarhea…so far so good. Does this mean that his vommiting (one time) was just a freak thing? There was nothing in his vomite (like paper or chunks of anything that would make me believe he ate something) he has been wormed (once by the breeder’s vet)….Am I just freaking out? If it was Parvo would he have gotten worse by now? He hasn’t been anywhere (not even in our backyard) because we were waiting until he got more vaccines. He is trained to go on his puppy pads….I’m just wondering if I am being to laxed about this?? I just don’t want to jump the gun and spend at least another $300 if it’s really not necessary, but I don’t know much about the onset of Parvo…

Symptoms: Stomach sun-king in, dullness in face, not eating. First pup i found laying in the grass weak and couldn’t move but still breathing but was unresponsive like it was in shok or something, i moved it and tried to get it to stand but it wouldn’t its head just fell bck lifleless and motionless, it could not even move a limb, did not make a sound or nothing, 30mins later it died, then i discovered blood all around its anal side. 2 dys later the other died of same symptoms. I called my vet office and describesd what happnd to them cause i have 3 older dogs one of which is their mother cause it seemed like parvo to me after reading bout it. the vet tech said it might be worms also. I had no idea worms killed pups like that? I realized that they were dewormed but only for roundwroms with a over the counter wormer and just found out it was expired since June. Their mother and my other 2 dgs were also only dewormed for roundworms a long time ago but were given all their 3 sets of shots as a puppy and are current on rabies shots.and one of them usually get his booster every yr as he is 4yrs and the mother and other one just turned 2. Do i need to get a booster shot for them in case of parvo? any idea what might have happened? She has had a litter b4 but they all survived. also she did breast feed them still when they were about 7-8wks old.I have had dogs for the past 12yr and never had one die on me am just so paraniod now. Someone was goin to take them and also take them to the vet thats why i had not done so, so it was not that i just neglected them. I don’t know what could have happnd. but thinkin bout it could have been worms since it lives in them and could have been causing issue that i did not know. But they just seemed fine to me and symptoms only showed for a day and next day it was dead.
