Hookworms can usually only be diagnosed from a fecal exam under a microscope. I would ask your veterinarian what would be best. In the meantime, hookworm larvae can live in the soil where your pet uses the bathroom. It’s imperative that stools are picked up daily so that your pet has less chance of reinfecting itself.

Q&A: Another question?

Question by : Another question?
I had ringworm for weeks and then finally went to my doc. He said I got it from either my dog or my Mom’s dog. I couple days later a found a spot on my Mom’s dog that just looked like mine. We took her to the vet and she said it didn’t look like ringworm. She plucked a couple hairs out of the area and told us she would call us in a couple of days. She never called. I know she had ringworm because it was in a circle, red, and dry like mine was. What should I do, call the vet back or put the cream I got for mine on the dogs ringworm?

Examination question

Question by HDB: Examination question
My dog has an appointment with the vet Friday for her rabies vaccine and booster vaccines. When I called the office told me to bring a stool sample. I told them that her stool was just tested 6 months ago when she had her heartworm test. Her stool and blood were both negative.

Now they are telling me that the dog needs to have her stool checked every 6 months. I think the vet is just looking to make an extra $ 40bucks, which was the charge 6 months ago.

If once a year was fine for the past 3 years, why should my dog need to have stool tested again? She get s Interceptor monthly to protect her from heartworms and will kills any hookworms, roundworms, whipworms that she may pick up. I should add that she stays in the house except to go in my fenced back yard.

Should I reject the stool test since she just had one 6 months ago? Serious answers only, please. Thank you.
I extended the time on this question, hoping that the extra time might give me more time to pick a response.

The majority of the answers were great but I have not been able to pick just one, so I’m putting it to a vote.

Jessica, I never said that I thought my dog might be sick or have Parvo, and Parvo has nothing to do with what I asked. It was an ordinary question about checking a HEALTHY dog’s stool more than once a year.

In any case, I told the vet that I saw no reason to have it checked again. He told me that it was the CDC’s recommendation , and agreed with me that once per year is fine.

Just well, because 3 booster shots, $ 10 for her license and an office visit came to $ 178. The stool sample , which I declined, was raised to $ 45.

I will definitely be looking for another vet. I feel his prices are way too high.

There can still be other things that may point out symptoms to unnoticable diseases… Coccidiosis comes to mind and my dog was on Interceptor and still got worms… So, the stool sample may be 40$ but, I would bring it anyhow…

Question about Hookworms and treatment?

Question by Georgia Peach: Question about Hookworms and treatment?
We rescued a stray dog and I took it to the vet to get checked out. They said the dog has hookworms and gave me Iverhart Max to treat them. I’ve also found something called WormXplus. Will the Iverhart take care of the hookworms or can this other product be used in addition to the Iverhart?

Is anyone familiar with WormXplus? It also doesn’t say how often to give the chewables, it came with 4 tablets (30 mg each for the size of the dog) (Yes, I’ve called the vet but they close early on Tuesdays)

Thanks!
Taboo – I appreciate the input but I’ve never given an injection and would be terrified to even try. The other problem is the dog already has hookworms so I’m really concerned with the type of treatment right now.
Taboo, I apologize I misunderstood your response.

I like Ivermecitin orally once/month @ .01ml/cc per 10 lbs. body weight. Non-luer lock seringe. Remove needle after med draw-up. Administer orally. Can be dosed as much as once/week up to once per month depending on desired theraputic effects.

This prevents every type of internal parasite except for tape worm. It also controls sarcoptic mange mite. Your Vet doesnt want you to know about this treatment.

It is the primary ingredient in iverhart max and heartgaurd…but much much cheeper! Found at any farm supply store. DO NOT get the IvermecPlus for liverflukes..it will kill your dog!

**Caution needed for any Collie or Collie mix breed dog. They are sensitive the any of these anti-parasitics and they can have devestating effects on this breed. SeeK VET advise for options when dealing with Collies**

Question by MarieLR: Question about tapeworms in dogs. Found rice like moving particles on my dogs tail last night.?
I know it is tapeworms. She is 5 months old and I called my vet and she is going in for a treatment at 5:15 today. My question is what must I do to my home. I already vacummed the house and sofas, washed all the sheets and covers (she is a cuddle bug) and mopped the floor. Is there any other steps I should take when I get home to protect my family and my dog from reinfestation? I do realize I may be overdoing this, but those little moving particles of rice grossed me out. Also, please tell me what the vet will give my puppy.
I adopted her from a Humane Society on Feb. 4th. I have NEVER given her raw food. She has only ever eaten high quality dry puppy food in my home, in addition to dog biscuits for training purposes.

Pick up all the dog poo in the yard – the egg sacks (the rice-like segments you are seeing) lay dormant in the poo and get “reingested” by other animals eating grass…and the tapes are passed to them who also poo in the yard and your puppy or kids run through the mess, get some on there hands..feet and the lifecycle continues. Also – dogs get tapeworms from ingesting fleas – you need to treat your home/yard for fleas as well. Unless you have a rabid infestation of fleas in your home you should be pretty safe – it sounds like you have done a good job cleaning up. Make sure you are using bleach and hot water to clean. And make sure your kids are washing their hands after every time they play with the puppy. Also don’t let the puppy lick them on the mouth.

Your vet will give your puppy a little pill called Drontal or Droncit and send you home with another tablet to give him in 3 weeks – that should clear it up.
