our boston terrier pups a year later

a year ago, the puppies were sicker..than a dog :-) We had just gotten them from a shelter and they became deathly ill – they both developed pneumonia and had parasites… They are doing so much better a year later – here they are enjoying a late fall day.

Question by grumpyjen28: my pups are 7 weeks and they went to the vet yesterday and they got hookworms?
i have 2 chihuahua puppies. and they are almost 7 weeks old. i just learned yesterday they have hookworms. and i am mad about it. so now i am treating the mom and pups with a dewormer from vet. i can believe the mom would have cause she goes outside and all. well anyways i was planning on selling the pups but i am not sure if i am allowed to or not. when can i sell them and how long does it take to have the pups worm free and how would i know. i have never had my dogs have hookworms or any kind. but i was told by the vet its common especially in our area with all the wild animals.
i did deworm the pups starting at 3 weeks of age but not the mom. sorry to forget to mention. and i am not a puppy mill this is her first litter. just to let you know and she is fixed. thankyou

The puppies possibly got the hookworms from the mother. They can only get into the puppies orally, via the placenta before birth, via the mothers milk, or through the skin.

If there was a risk of hookworm, the puppies should have been treated at 2 – 3 weeks of age, but they will need treating again in 2 – 4 weeks anyway as some larvae may not have hatched and any treatment you are now giving them, will only kill the adult hookworm.

You will need to treat the mother too. I believe one hookworm can produce something like 20000 eggs in one day.

Sometimes a blood tranfusion is necessary as the hookworm will feed off the blood of the dog.

Once they are fully recovered and you have the all clear from the vet, which may be in 6 weeks or so, there is no reason why the puppies cannot go to a new home.

Did My Vet Misdiagnose My Pup’s Problem Last Month?

Last month, my adopted 18-month-old (rescue) pups went to the vet. One had been losing weight/not eating. Vet did a rectal swab/test tand reported that he had contracted a bacterial infection ‘in his gut’ that he got from drinking ‘dirty water’. I assume he meant contaminated water from another dog’s dish. Long story short: he gave us a ten day round of meds. We took five days off and then finished up with another ten day round. Didnt miss a dose.
About bedtime (it’s now 5 AM) the pup started acting crazy. He was pacing through the house, going into rooms and closets; he’d lie down; get up; scratch himself; act like he had fleas; jerk his head around like something was bothering him –couldn’t be still for more than 3 seconds at a time– He’d come put his paws on me and stare into my eyes…that’s when I knew without a doubt that something was really wrong. I finally figured out that my dog has worms… I’ve never had this breed of dog before and I thought that maybe it was his anal glands; I’d seen him scooting earlier in the evening. (By the way, he’d had his heartworm meds yesterday).
After applying a warm wash cloth to his behind –bear with me– I found a light brown, flat (fluke-like) worm on the wash cloth.
1. Did my vet mis-diagnose my pup last month?
2. I assume this is very serious. Has pup’s health been compromised?
3. Are there home remedies for emergencies? What could I have done to alleviate Pup’s misery all night long? I gave him massages and tummy rubs, etc. We are waiting right now for the vet’s office to open. It has been a long and miserable night. And I suspect this is going to be a long healing process.
BTW I thought he was doing fine because he’d regained his appetite and his weight was back to normal. He seemed to be symptom free. Please let me know what you think … and what I should have done differently. I feel pretty miserable about this.
PS You guys have been very helpful to me in the past.
