It’s according to the age of your puppy, I do all my dogs shots but the vet has to do the rabies shot where I live. Make sure that you tent the skin and put the shot in the skin, if you go too far you’ll shoot the shot in the air and not do your puppy any good. You should feel a little bump in the skin until it goes in. You should not feel a big wet spot, if so you went too far. You also need to get a heart worm med. from your vet, even house dogs are in danger of heart worms.I do a 6-9-12 week schedule for my puppies and then yearly. What you have sounds fine.

Question by Ellen: Fostering a puppy with tapeworms- what about the other dogs?
We are fostering a pup who definitely has tapeworms [ I've seen them in his poo] and probably some other worms. The earliest vet appt. we could get is tomorrow at 3:30, and we’ve had the pup since Monday night.

I’ve tried to be really dilligent about picking up his poo, and I’m about 80% sure I’ve gotten it all up. How worried should I be about him transmitting the worms to our two pet dogs?

Our dogs are on Advantage Multi, which protects against hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, but not tapeworms. I’m sure the vet will instruct me on what to do tomorrow, but do you think we will need to treat our dogs for tapeworms?

Thanks!

As long as the puppy has been separated from your pets completely you should be fine. It may help to clean your floors with bleach water where you are keeping the puppy as well, to kill any other bugs that he may have brought with him.

canine distemper puppy “Lillie”

On June 28th we went to the flea market while we were there we saw the Humane Society of Inverness’ booth. We had been searching for a puppy and they were selling lots of them we thought since they were the Humane Society it would be safe to get a puppy from them we picked out this cute little calm puppy iI called them on the way home because she was coughing. We did not get a response. I took her to the vet the next day and was told she had 3 diffrent types of parasites, coccidia, round worms, and giardia. All of these are transmittable to people. She also had eather kennel cough or distemper. Thursday we took her to the vet again because she was not getting better at all. they gave us stronger medicine for kennel cough and requested that they could test her for distemper. we took her home put her on the new medicine and she seemed to be getting better except for her eyes. today we found out on the phone that she had distemper. A couple days back we decided a perfect name that matched her personality and the name was Lillie. Tomorrow we have to have her put to sleep we were sooooooo sad. The place we got her from doesn’t even want to give us our money back for the adoption cost and they told us detemper was not a big deal and is not very contagious you decide.

Question by julesxoxo: Does my puppy have ringworm? And did I catch it from him??!!?
I’ve had my new puppy, Buster, for a little over a week. I adopted him from the Humane Society last Saturday. He is a lab boxer mix and 9 weeks old and about 9 pounds. Yesterday I noticed a round, raised circle on his belly. I searched for pictures of ringworm on dogs and it looked more like red patches with loss of hair. About 3 days ago, I had an itchy feeling on my right shoulder blade, I couldn’t see anything and had my boyfriend check it out-there was not spot/rash or anything. Today my shoulder blade started itching again, so I checked it out in the mirror and now there is a scaly patch in the shape of a circle. Is this ringworm? Do both me and my puppy have it? How do i get rid of it? How much does it cost?! Please help! He has a vet appointment on Thursday for his 2nd puppy vaccination, should i wait that long to get this checked out?

It’s possible that you both do have ringworm – your veterinarian can diagnose for sure with what’s called a “Woods Lamp” – essentially, a small blacklight that will cause the ringworm-causing fungus to fluoresce.

As for you, you can purchase an anti-fungal cream over-the-counter at any drug store/Wal-Mart/etc. It should take care of your problem if that’s what it is.

Have your vet check it out on Tuesday, it’s no emergency.

Housed in filthy, overcrowded, wire-bottom cages, their coats so over-grown and matted they couldnt see or walk, more than 90 Yorkshire terriers lived their entire lives with little social interaction and no veterinary care. They needed help. Friday the 13th turned out to be their lucky day! The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Taskforce drove more than 500 miles and spent more than 19 hours rescuing these pitiful dogs from a substandard puppy mill in Greene County. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009-When they arrived in St. Louis, our triage team of veterinarians, animals care staff and groomers went to work. We found dental disease, skin and bone infections, malnutrition and heartworms. Nearly 50 lbs. of disgusting, noxious, matted hair was shaved from these dogs. Each was given a clean, warm, comfy place to sleep with plenty of food and water perhaps for the first time in their lives.
