What is the process to get rid of heartworms in dogs?

Question by Dana: What is the process to get rid of heartworms in dogs?
My dog DOESN’T have heartworms, but I was curious. We are looking for another dog and the one we love had heartworms, and recently had heartworm treatment to get rid of it. I know there is heartworm preventative, but what do you do AFTER a dog has heartworms? Do they have to have surgery? Is it fatal even after the heartworms are gone? I just wanted to make sure we don’t get a sick dog.

There are herbal programs for heartworm which avoids the toxicity and possible death of the regular treatment that uses poisons. This website has been passed around the internet for many years and the girl that works with you is extremely knowledgeable. She’s got some success stories on the website and if I remember right, she’s got some folks who are even willing to talk to you about how the program went with them. We have cats, but even they are getting heartworms these days, so I’m glad there’s some natural alternatives to the poison.

We found my dog a few months ago as a stray and he recently tested positive for hookworms. The vet gave us some medicine to give him and ever since he’s had crazy amounts of diarrhea lately. He has to go out every few hours and we just get a ton of poop.
I expected this for a couple of days since all the worms need to flush out, but it’s been 5 days and still the same. Is this typical? And when we give him his second shot to make sure the larvae that have hatched are killed will we have the same scenario or will it be better the second time around?
It’s been super hot here and he’s not drinking much water so I’m worried he’s dehydrated from all the loss of fluids. He’s been a bit more tired than usual though we did have him playing in the creek all weekend which wore him out. I just want to make sure that his current actions and symptoms are pretty normal… thanks for all the input!
