should I be able to see hookworms?

Question by sylver890: should I be able to see hookworms?
I gave my dog Panacur once a day for 3 consecutive days, repeated the procedure after 3 weeks again. The vet told me that I would be able to see the hookworms in his feces after couple of days, however I did not see anything, so I was wondering if anyone has had similar experience? is it possible that the hookworms are gone even though I didn’t see them when I was picking up after my dog?
I know that he had hookworms because his vet told me so, however I had never seen them myself.

Question by Nikki: My dog has roundworms and hookworms, how do i clean my house?
I got a new puppy two weeks ago. I took her to the vet and found she had both type of worms. She will be taking a new medication for it starting monday night. She has had a few accients in the house, and I always clean them properly. I wash my hands before cooking and such, but I am worried the larva live sin my carpet or oher places in my house. She goes poddy in the front yard until she is clear and can go in the backyard with my older dog as I do not want him to get it. how do I keep my house clean? How likely is it that me or my son can catch this? very scary stuff. never had to deal with this before. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

If you have cleaned up after the dog, there is no risk in your house. The worms live outside in the soil not in carpets. After they leave the body of the dog, if not in the ground outside, they will die.

Q&A: what are are the signs of hookworms in humans?

People dont usually get hookworms, or not in the way that dogs and cats do anyway. Our skin is too thick for them to enter the body easily and too complex for them to travel into deeper tissues and especially not all the way too the digestive tract. However, people can get cutaneous larvae migration in there skin from contaminated soils.

Your husbands belly probably just hurts from thinking about internal parasites. Its enough to make any one grossed out.

Question by Jennifer: how long after treatment will my dog be free of hookworms? and how soon can i retreat her?
We rescued a 2 yr old Chihuahua a couple of days ago and were told she was completely healthy and housebroken, however we discovered ear mites, hookworms and fleas within the 1st 24 hrs of getting her, also come to find out she is NOT housebroken. This is very scary for us as we have a 1 year old toddler/crawler and a 5 yr old min pin in the house along with a 6yr old and a 9 yr old. we’ve treated her with an oral liquid for the worms, cleaned up after her poopies completely and thoroughly. We keep her in the downstairs for now. After treatment we saw about 10 or so dead worms on her doggie bed for 2 nights in a row (GROSS). My question is how long will she have dead worms crawling out of her butt and how soon can we treat her again to make sure we clear them out?

Did you get the dewormer from your vet? We usually give medication for about 3-5 days and it’s usually gone. OTC meds will not work and can be dangerous for your dog. Be sure to get the dog on Frontline and Heargaurd once it’s gone so you don’t need to worry about again!

Controlling hookworms?

Question by Jennifer V: Controlling hookworms?
We adopted a sweet little Cocker a month ago. She was dewormed prior to adoption, but we discovered that she has hookworms. We have taken her to the vet, and are in the process of deworming our whole “crew” (another dog and 2 cats)
But hookworms can reinfest animals easily by burrowing into the dogs paw pads when outside in their potty area.
Does anyone know of a reliable means to kill off the eggs and hookworms in the ground so they don’t keep getting reinfected? We live in the country, so the “potty area”, while fairly well established is not a fenced in area. Also, we have a number of wild / feral critters that could be in this area, so would prefer something safe…
I’m also concerned about my kids (10 yrs to 18 months in age) getting them. :P
Does anyone have suggestions or products they have used?

Heartgard Plus treats and controls hookworms, so that should help keeps the pets healthy. Unfortunately from what I gather, there is no consumer product to kill the hookworm larvae in the soil. The second site I listed in the source section says “Experts recommend sprinkling borax on the ground and on concrete. A second suggestion is to mix a ratio of 1.5 pound salt:1 gallon of water. Saturate the area with one pint for every square foot.” I can’t say from experience if either of those work.

Without knowing for sure if these methods work you’re probably best off always wearing shoes when you’re outside for at least a month after you’re sure your dog is clean, because the larvae can survive in soil in the summer for 4 weeks. And of course always clean up after your dog
