heartworms are very, very bad and you really need to think about the long-term treament options. a lot of times, untreated they are deadly.

What are heartworms, in dogs?

Question by fyouimatwirp: What are heartworms, in dogs?
Ok, so both of my puppies have heartworms…
I know that they get it from blood transfusions… like from other dogs, when a mosquito bites one infected dog, it will infect other dogs too…

I was just wondering… how did the heartworms start?
I mean, cancer, aids, asthma… all of these diseases, didnt pop up until the last two centuries…

How did heartworms start originally…
if anyone knows.. shed some light please…

Question by joey322: how expensive is it to treat heartworms in dogs?? not surgery, but the other treatments??
i was under the impression that treating heartworms in a dog is very costly, but our friend’s dog has them and they seemed to think the treatment would be “no big deal”…..

hmmmm……
for those of you misinformed…SOME extreme cases have to be treated surgically b/c the worms are so infested that the dog would not survive the “flushing” of the worms out the system.

You need a medication from a vet and it’s less than $ 80 for the full treatment.

do dogs always have a cough if they have heartworms?

Question by Rebecca: do dogs always have a cough if they have heartworms?
Someone told us that our 10year old outside dog has heartworms because he won’t eat nor drink very much. He will eat a little chicken breasts ( maybe 2 little pieces at a time) and a little water if we hold a bowl in front of him. I have even given him a couple of tablespoonfuls of Karo syrup. He does not throw up nor has blood in his stool. We were also told that if he has heartworms that he would be coughing, but he doesn’t. He has lost weight.
