Does the stuff called Heartgard work? I saw it at http://www.abconlinepharmacy.com/ns/customer/product2024-c-p1 and I’m wondering if anyone has used it for your dog.

Yes, Heart Guard works! BUT – have your dog tested for it before putting him on ANY heart worm preventative.

I have 2 large dogs and every month I give them the heartworm stuff but because they’re so big it’s pretty expensive. They’re indoors 80% of the time by their choice, I think that’s typical of Great Danes though, I think that might be why they’re sometimes called Castle Dogs But anyways so because they’re indoors so much whats the chance that they’d really get heartworms? How do dogs get heartworms? Am I wasting my money? I want to keep my dogs healthy but I don’t want to buy the heartworm meds if its highly unlikely that they’d get heartworms anyways. What do you guys think? Thank you in advance for your answers.

Dogs get heart worms from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can very easily get in your house. And it only takes a few seconds for the mosquito to bite your dog when it does go outside. Yes heart worm medicine is necessary and worth the money.

My white husky began losing her hair 1 week after treatment. My vet suggested “Benedril” 3 times/day. Hair continues to shed and there are many raw spots. Vet said it was allergic reaction to heat, which has been humid 90% and 80 degrees.

get a second opinion!
bad reaction to the heart worm preventative happens:it is mainly dogs that are part collie, or border collie, sheltie.
Are you sure your dog is pure husky?
If not sure, there are other meds that are considered safe for collies or collie crosses(and sheltie, border collie)
Other possibility:something else out there causing poor dog to have a bad reaction?
Give the dog Benadryl:I take it, when i have a reaction to some mosquito bites.
Go to a different vet, if the hair is still falling out:is it on the face?could be something called demodex.

I am interested in adopting a dog from a Shelter and they said that the dogs previous owners dropped her off cause she had Heartworm. They said they have since treated her and she is Heartworm free and on Preventative medication now. I’m just wondering if anyone knows if it is something that is cured completely or does it have a chance of coming back?

If the dog is Heartworm Free now, you should be fine if you make sure that you keep her on monthly heartworm preventative.

I have read a lot of comments on the treatments and such, but would like to know some of the symptoms are. Also, if not opting for the treatment of them, which sounds pretty harsh for the dogs, what is the live expectancy of the canine?

Coughing and bringing up liquids are some symptoms of heartworms. Symptoms get much worse and more complicated as the infestation gets heavier. Life expectancy depends on the infestation and the dog itself. It’s a HORRIBLE way for a dog to die. The treatment may be hard on the dog but its much better than letting the dog suffer a die because of heartworms. Not getting treatment is considered abuse.
