Question by justn4me: Is it safe to treat tapeworms in a nursing female dog, will it hurt the puppies?
I know it will be safe to treat the female dog for hookworms & roundworms, but I am not completely sure about tapeworms. The daddy dog has tapeworms and if he has them then I am sure the mom does too. I will be giving her Happy Jack Tapeworm tablets, is it safe for the puppies? Should I treat them too? They are 2 weeks old.

Marta is a beautiful sweet GSD that came up as a stray and has been in our shelter’s city kennels now for a few weeks. She is unfortunately positive for heartworms, and will be treated. We do need funds to help us do this! She is available for adoption, and it may be possible for her to be adopted and finish treatment in her new home, or for her to finish her treatment at the shelter. My cat has been dragging her butt “scooting” on the ground and then I noticed increased trips to the litter box with little urination. She has been more vocal lately but still affectionate. I have had her for four years and she has never once peed on anything but within the last week she has been peeing on blankets and today she peed in the bathtub and I noticed her pee was pinkish she even tried to pee on my sleeping brother. I’m fairly certain this is a UTI. However, that doesn’t explain the scooting. Anyone have any suggestions? I am going to make her an appointment tomorrow for the vet. Anyone have any idea what the cost range will be? Also, my roommates have three dogs and two others were visiting for a while. Im worried the scooting could be from worms. Any other ideas? How long before contact would it take for symptoms to occur? Thank you in advance for any help. I’m very worried. Please assure me she isn’t going to die. She’s only four.
