Experience with Heartworms in Dogs?

Question by Hey, you gonna finish that: Experience with Heartworms in Dogs?
My Dog, Shorty, came back with a clean bill of health from Vet monday, but got a call today saying she has heartworms after they ran a blood sample. I got her from the SPCA about this time last year, and while she was clean when i they tested her 11 months ago, the vet said the test is only good for 5-6 month PRIOR, and only finds adult worms. so while she was at the pound, she likely contracted them. BUT, good news is i’ve been giving her heartworm pills each month since i got her, so Vet said they aren’t multiplying, and there are 2 options.

1. going through the heartworm treatment, which takes time and is painful for the dog. http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/faqs.html#q8
2. continue giving pills religiously, and they should die off within 2-3 yrs. if she shows no signs of being ill, then they aren’t blocking much of her heart. but i DON”T like the idea of them being in her so long.

. any one have any experience with this topic, did anyone’s dog do alright staying just with the HW prevention pill and live a long life? SHe is almost 2 years old, and is about 35lbs. An other wise very healthy and happy dog.
thx much, situation has me bummed for sure :(

Regardless of what route you take to cure her, you need to find out about doxycycline, which should be given in conjunction with either treatment. I hope I spelled that right. There is new info out there about both methods but I don’t have a website for you.

Question by shorty19775: Anyone have any experience with treating ring worm on a dog?
Took my new dachshund (5 yr old male) that we just adopted like 3 weeks ago to the vet on Saturday for a check up and to look at his skin b/c he kinda had some patches on his side. Vet thinks it may be ring worm and took a culture but I have to wait 3 weeks to find out and it seems it is getting worse now. He licked himself last night and it got all red like he licked it raw. It never looked like that before and I feel bad and want to be able to help him out alittle. Any suggestions?

I have a 5.5lb, 1yr4mo old male Chihuahua. I took him in for his annual check up and when they did the fecal test they found he had roundworms and FLUKE eggs in his stool. I religiously give him his Interceptor medicine (to prevent heartworm and various worms) but he still had roundworm. What I am concerned about is the FLUKE. In my area the FLUKE (worm) is very very rare and the vet doesn’t know where he picked it up. I have researched and know all about the trasmission through fecal matter…….my little guy is super clean, very well behaved- he doesn’t dig in the dirt, is only outside to go potty only rarely trys to eat stuff (like pieces of bark) off the ground. I closely supervise him and take things out of his mouth he isn’t supposed to have. He does NOT eat raw fish and is not exposed to lake water etc. (some of the possible ways to get Fluke) He is being treated with medicine right now. (He had no symptoms of infection) Please tell me your dogs experience!!! Are they healthy?
