Rarely is the cough productive. It only happens directly after a period of sleep, especially in the morning, or inactivity. It lasts a few rounds of cough-up’s and he’s done. He does NOT cough after exertion or play. Seems not to be going away and becoming chronic. He is active and energetic and can play hard with the other dogs without getting winded. This suggests to me it is not CHF or heart worms. Its almost like a little fluid settles in his lung and he needs to briefly cough it out with a few hacks. Possibly its just a respiratory infection that is lingering. -Lou Video Rating: 0 / 5
My dog been doing this for 1 year since Summer… Visit the vet 4 times, they all say it is allergy. Tried different allergy medicine but didn’t work. My dog eats well, plays well, behaves the same except this coughing/sneezing sign. Can someone tell me what is this?? Someone told me it could be heart worm which I dont think so… Video Rating: 0 / 5
Question by lee c: How successful is heart worm treatment when dog is already coughing?
My 7 year old beagle has just been tested positive for heartworm. She has been coughing for three weeks and tires easily. I am trying to find someone that has had a dog with the same symptoms (coughing and heavy breathing) that went ahead and seeked the treatment. If so was it successful?

My husband and I adopted a dog from the local animal shelter last week. I took him to the vet just for a check up the day after we brought him home. He had hook worms and whip worms. I’ve given him the 3 day treatment for the worms already. He’s eating and drinking normally and doesn’t seem overly tired or lethargic, but late last night he started vomiting/coughing/gagging. He starts with a deep almost chesty cough and gags then throws up a white foam/clear liquid. Every once in a while he also coughs up a thicker mucus almost and his nose runs quite a bit. He’s also breathing a little heavily, but he’s done that for as long as we’ve had him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We’re going to the vet first thing in the morning, but any advice on how I can treat his symptoms temporarily or help make him more comfortable would be great. Any insight as to what this might be would be appreciated as well so we’re not totally unprepared at the dr’s tomorrow. Thanks so much!
