Question by Margarita: Is it normal for a dog to attack a mouse? Can she get sick?
I just let my dog out into our fenced backyard. I always keep an eye on her. She sometimes chases moths and it appeared that she was doing that tonight. But when I looked closer, she actually had something in her mouth. It was a mouse from the field behind our house. I was mortified. I ran out there and got her to release it, and it hobbled off. I went back to look for it after I let her in, but to no avail. My dog was basically chewing on it and I feel so bad because I know it is suffering now. Is it possible that it will survive? I feel awful.

And could my dog get parasites from this? I know cats can get them.

It is completely normal for dog to munch on mice. Mice can carry intermal parasites just like cats and dogs. Most commonly intestinal worms, most common are tape worms and roundworms. Call your vet, he or she may suggest a fecal check on your dog in approximately 2-4 weeks. (closer to 4 weeks.) As far as the mouse……….well he has learned to avoid dogs.
