Has Your Dog Ever Gotten Parasites? (worms) Please Share Your Experience!!!?
I have a 5.5lb, 1yr4mo old male Chihuahua. I took him in for his annual check up and when they did the fecal test they found he had roundworms and FLUKE eggs in his stool. I religiously give him his Interceptor medicine (to prevent heartworm and various worms) but he still had roundworm. What I am concerned about is the FLUKE. In my area the FLUKE (worm) is very very rare and the vet doesn’t know where he picked it up. I have researched and know all about the trasmission through fecal matter…….my little guy is super clean, very well behaved- he doesn’t dig in the dirt, is only outside to go potty only rarely trys to eat stuff (like pieces of bark) off the ground. I closely supervise him and take things out of his mouth he isn’t supposed to have. He does NOT eat raw fish and is not exposed to lake water etc. (some of the possible ways to get Fluke) He is being treated with medicine right now. (He had no symptoms of infection) Please tell me your dogs experience!!! Are they healthy?

Interceptor has has a history of breakthrough infestations, so the roundworm issue isn’t surprising. I recommend regular worming with Panacur on top of the heartworm preventative. I don’t know what to tell you about flukes, as I have never come across a dog with them in over twenty years. Does your vet have any ideas of how he acquired them?
I rescued my hound mix from a hunting club that were going to shoot her because she wouldn’t hunt deer(I was too late for her sister) My dog would play with hunters instead of hunt. I rescued her and took her to the vet. They said she had hook worms and she had to have medicine. A few months ago I took her to the vet and she had lung worms but we got rid of them in 2 weeks.
Hope this helped.
My dog had worms as a puppy – I know because I saw the worm in her stool, it was disgusting. She got meds and is now perfectly fine and healthy. I have never heard of this fluke worm though…if the vet thinks that he will be ok after the meds then I am sure everything will be ok. You sound like a good puppy parent, so I don’t think there is anything more you could have done to prevent this.
Got any neighbors that like to fish?
And sorry, I’ve never had them either. Also, the other reader that suggested using Panacur. Good Idea. My Vet thinks so too.
Best of Luck!
Yes. Now she take worm pills now and then.
I think you are doing the best thing by taking him to the vet and getting him an antibotic. My dog had worms three weeks ago and had the nasty poops. We got her de-wormed with pills but her poops are still so nasty and I’m scared she might still have them even though the doctors assured me it was very unilkely. I am still narrowing my options. So have you ever had her around other dogd or maybe there is something in the water, or could she have recieved them from her mother or father.
My dogs used to get roundworms quite frequently. It seemed like I’d get them treated, they’d be okay, then they’d get them again. I found out that they could get them from the sniffing the ground if eggs were present! Since they are microscopic I wouldn’t be able to see them. (I am a microscopist so I brought them into work to confirm.)
One of the ways you can treat roundworms is with salt.
So, fortunately, my dogs usually bathroom in the dogpen next to the house. Unfortunately, the dog pen is pretty large so it’s a hard area to treat.
So, we had to rent equipment to tear up the ground then we rototilled it with lots and lots of salt. I mean lots! We had to have a truck deliver it.
It was just horrible, a lot of work, time and expense but eventually the dogs didn’t test positive for roundworm anymore.
I wish you the best of luck in your roundworm and fluke problem. The good news on our end (no pun intended) is that there were no lasting effects to the dogs. There were to our bank accounts, backs and feet though.
Any dog can get any type of worms, I have never experienced a dog having Fluke worms but have had a puppy with Tape worm visible and all dogs do have different types of worms in them but you just have to continue with regular treatments to control it, although I was once told to use a different brand/type of wormer every time, as some are more effective with different types then others. Milbemax cleared my dogs worms but he did have some side effects so using Drontal Plus now, Panacur was also good.
I was also told that if the dog seems particularly prone to worms showing that I should worm him every 3 months instead of 6.
The other thing you can do on top of this if he has ’bouts’ is to give him a pumpkin seed a day, or a little desicated coconut on his food as both of these have anti parasitic properties.
I’ve had a bad experience with them before. We adopted an Aussie mix from a shelter in my area. We were told we were getting a healthy older dog. She was walked every day at the shelter like the other dogs, no behavior problems, no one noticed anything off. We got her home and brought her to the vet for her first visit with him and found out she had whipworms.
We also found out she was NOT older (she was in fact not even a year old). When we fixed her up, we also fixed the energy level the shelter never saw because she was sick. It skyrocketed and we couldn’t control her. We tried training but every time she learned something new that was good, she started doing something bad – chasing cars was the biggie.
Being only second timers in the dog owning world we were rather clueless in how to deal with her. We knew she would need exercise and prepared for that, plus a lot of obedience work, but we had been told she was older and we weren’t prepared for that puppy energy and lack of manners.
Now we don’t adopt from that shelter anymore and urge others to be cautious to make sure the dog they are looking at has been to see the vet before they take the dog home. WE kept my Aussie for the summer and tried hard to help her but i was going away to college (parents wanted a dog to keep them company while i was gone, but wanted me to train it before i left) and it took too long to train her to the point where they could handle her. So we had to re home her.
Other than that all of my dogs have been healthy and parasite free.
that is way to much writing
i go dizzy reading it
