Can You Catch Worms From Your Dog?

My dog looks like he has worms so I’m off to get him some panacure today. However, my 5 year old seems to have similar symptoms and I’m awaiting a call back from the health visitor. Is this coincidence or is it related?

The worms dogs carry show up as skin lesions. You would know if he had them.

Your child doesn’t have them unless you are looking at a skin lesion. Your vet has even more cool pictures he could show you. Human parasites are different types.
no i find it hard to get an earthworm from my dog, it never gives it up wonder why
go ask a good vet
Yes. Definitely go to your doctors as your little one may need some medicine too. I think it comes in the form of a syrup in a satchet.
Probably best if you go asap as my friend said that the vet had told her that it could be quite nasty for a child if nothing is done.
yes it is highly coincidence just take it easy and hope for the best
Yes you can catch worms from your pets. When you worm ur pets, it is best to also worm all humans in the house. So, if you are worming the dog, do the children, urself, ur husband/partner, the cat (if you have one) etc. That way you get all the worms, not just some.
Of course you can & I think it’s quite dangerous in humans the worms can get in your eyes & blind you.
Yes you can catch worms from your dog. It happened to my son when he was a toddler, we had just bought a puppy and not yet got the wormers from the vet, he had a round worm which came out when he was on the potty, it didn’t come out fully I had to pull it out. I phoned the Doctor and he said to bring the worm in with my son, he gave him some medication to kill any remaining worms and eggs and he was fine after that. Our dogs have always been wormed regularly every 3 months since that happened, not something I wanted to see again.
5 year olds come into contact with dogs probably in more ways than adults do, so it is a possibility. It could be related.
It is possible to catch worms from your dog. However, it is rare for the scary stuff (like someone mentioned before about blindness) to happen. I would still have your child checked out but most likely he is fine. I am treating a puppy for roundworms and have been very worried about my 3 year old catching them but I spoke with his pediatrician (practicing for 15+ years) and he said that he has never had to treat a patient with VLM or OLM. I included some information about Roundworms just for your knowledge.
What is toxocariasis?
Toxocariasis is a zoonotic (animal to human) infection caused by the parasitic roundworms commonly found in the intestine of dogs (Toxocara canis) and cats (T. cati).
What are the symptoms of toxocariasis?
There are two major forms of toxocariasis:
1) Ocular larva migrans (OLM):
Toxocara infections can cause OLM, an eye disease that can cause blindness. OLM occurs when a microscopic worm enters the eye; it may cause inflammation and formation of a scar on the retina. Each year more than 700 people infected with Toxocara experience permanent partial loss of vision.
2) Visceral larva migrans (VLM):
Heavier, or repeated Toxocara infections, while rare, can cause VLM, a disease that causes swelling of the body’s organs or central nervous system. Symptoms of VLM, which are caused by the movement of the worms through the body, include fever, coughing, asthma, or pneumonia.
How serious is infection with Toxocara?
In most cases, Toxocara infections are not serious, and many people, especially adults infected by a small number of larvae (immature worms), may not notice any symptoms. The most severe cases are rare, but are more likely to occur in young children, who often play in dirt, or eat dirt (pica) contaminated by dog or cat stool.
How is toxocariasis spread?
The most common Toxocara parasite of concern to humans is T. canis, which puppies usually contract from the mother before birth or from her milk. The larvae mature rapidly in the puppy’s intestines; when the pup is 3 or 4 weeks old, they begin to produce large numbers of eggs that contaminate the environment through the animal’s stool. The eggs soon develop into infective larvae.
How can I get toxocariasis?
You or your children can become infected after accidentally ingesting (swallowing) infective Toxocara eggs in soil or other contaminated surfaces.
What should I do if I think I have toxocariasis?
See your health care provider to discuss the possibility of infection and, if necessary, to be examined. A blood test is available for diagnosis.
What is the treatment for toxocariasis?
VLM is treated with antiparasitic drugs, usually in combination with anti-inflammatory medications. Treatment of OLM is more difficult and usually consists of measures to prevent progressive damage to the eye.
Who is at risk for toxocariasis?
Young children; owners of dogs and cats.
How can you prevent toxocariasis?
Have your veterinarian treat your dogs and cats, especially young animals, regularly for worms.
Wash your hands well with soap and water after playing with your pets and after outdoor activities, especially before you eat. Teach children to always wash their hands after playing with dogs and cats and after playing outdoors.
Do not allow children to play in areas that are soiled with pet or other animal stool.
Clean your pet’s living area at least once a week. Feces should be either buried or bagged and disposed of in the trash.
Teach children that it is dangerous to eat dirt or soil.
Yes you can, they dont tend to move that quickly so you should be able to pick them up quite easily.
no you cant get worms from other animals unless you phisically pick up the worms that were in the dogs system and eat them
NO you can’t Trust me I am a vet you can’t get worms!
Young children and dogs = regular worming regime
You would have to physically pick up the worms or eat the feces — not too many people would do that, but I suppose little kids might.
Check with your pediatrician.
Yes, as the first answer stated, but before worming all the people in your house talk with your physician. Especially small children. In the US you would have to anyways because those medications are Rx only.
Added : then follow the advice of your physician, you might want to let him/her know about any parasites the dog has though.
you can catch worms from dogs so you should ask a docter or vet wat to do
when my dog got worms many years ago my mum gave us all worm tablets to stop worms
try that
