Question by Lisa Christine: I found a worm where my dog was laying but I use heartgard. What to do?
I was just laying with my dog on my bed and when he got up there was a tiny white-ish worm were his butt was. I put the worm in a container just in case. I got him two months ago and he was clean and I use heartgard plus. I can’t call my vet until Monday but should I be worried?

Yes he might have worms, take the worm to the doctor and they’ll probably deworm him. Don’t play with those sort of things!

I wouldn’t be all that worried about it, it’s only a worm. Call your vet. Maybe your dog just spit out the heartgard pill you gave him last month.
heartguard is for heartworms. There are a lot of different kinds of worms animals can get. Your vet can give him a shot that will take care of the full range of parasites. It sounds like a tapeworm–did it look like a grain of rice? There are also hookworms and roundworms your dog could get. None of them are nice, but it’s not a vet emergency situation, either.
Tapeworms come from the animal ingesting fleas–make sure you always have some sort of flea guard on your dog after you get him dewormed in addition to the heartguard medication.
Heartguard is for Heartworm, not Intestinal Worms. Call the vet on Monday and bring a stool sample to them so they can give you the proper dose of wormer.
Don’t worry, it’s OK, your dog will be fine until it can be treated.Heartgard doesn’t have a tapeworm preventative in it but it does cover Ascarid and Hookworms. It says it on the box. I use Heartgard with my dogs. If it looks like a grain of rice, it is a tapeworm. You can also find them stuck in the dogs hair around his butt sometimes. It’s from them ingesting a flea. You can treat it at home. D-Worm is for tapeworms and I order mine from this company, very easy to use:

It’s good to keep a bottle around you never know when you will need it. It’s all according to the size of your dog. The vet will charge $20 to $30+ just for a worm pill, simply outrageous. When your dog can get tapeworms from simply playing with another dog and swallowing a flea.
It sounds like a tapeworm. Heartguard doesn’t kill tapeworms.
No you don’t need to be worried. The vet can give you a dewormer for tapeworms on Monday.
Make sure to keep your dog flea free. Fleas carry tapeworms.
