Give him / her heartguard, once a month treatment to prevent it
Once a year. She should be on a hearworm medicine yearround as well, such as heartguard, but this has to be prescribed by a vet.
Usually you test once a year for Heartworm along with your dog’s regular check-up and vaccines.
I’ve had two different answers from two different vets: 1. yearly. 2. if they take preventive medicine all year long and not just in mosquito season, then they can skip a year and only be tested every other year.
YOU NEED TO GET THE DOG ON A HEARTWORM PREVENATIVE NOW..THE VET WILL DO A HW CHECK B4 GIVING YOU ANYTHING FOR YOUR DOG…IF YOU KEEP YOUR DOG ON IT YR ROUND YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE ANOTHER CHECK UP FOR IT
Once a year.
Even on prevention (and all dogs need to be on prevention) certain dogs can still get heartworms.
All dogs are different, the drugs may not work for some of them, or the drugs themselves may not be working correctly.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Besides, it’s only a few dollars!
once a year
it all depends on your vet. mine only requires it every other year if you leave the dog on preventive year round. i still have my dogs tested every year, because heartgard is guaranteed if you can prove you gave it according to directions, however dog must be tested yearly in order to comply with guarantee. if you can prove that you gave your dog preventive year round and as directed, and your dog gets heartworms, then the company that makes heartgard will pay for treatment
Our vet requires an anual test, regardless of if the dog is on it thru the full year or not.
6 months after the first test, then annually after that (as long as you are giving your dog monthly heartworm preventatives diligently)
Each spring.. most vet clinics send you a postcard in the mail telling you it’s time to come in..
Because I can’t give my dog heart worm preventative (it gave her seizures), I have to have her tested twice a year. Everyone else is saying a year but it also depends on whether or not you are giving heart worm preventative medication. If you are, only once a year, If not, every six months.
Once a year and the dog needs heartworm preventative. And if it’s on preventative year round, if you miss a dose or are late you still need to get it tested.
beginning of summer – once the test comes back neg, then you can get heart worm preventative which is now pretty reasonable. The alternative is horrid. In the early 70s I had a wonderful male shepard/hound who got heart worms and went thru hell because it was not as well understood as now. I knew nothing of the tests and had to watch him constantly so that he didn’t get over excited because he couldn’t get enough air into his lungs. After the fact, the meds were 4 times a day.
