my dog getting his heart worm test soon and i’m worried!
My dog is going to be tested for heart worm’s next sunday and I’m worried that if he is tested positive then my mom wont be able to pay for the treatment’s, since she can barely pay her bill’s! If he is tested positive should we put him down? and if he is not positive how much will the med’s be each month. (My mom would be able to pay the med’s every month but not the treatment if he has heart worm’s). I know i should not be worrying right now but i care about my dog! If he does have heart worm’s i’ll try very hard to get my mom to help him. i will also would do my best to save up some money. (DONT BRING UP NONE OF THAT B.S OF HOW I’M HEARTLESS, CAUSE I’M ONLY KID! I CAN’T DO MUCH BUT BEG AND CRY) P.s. my dog is 2 year’s old. ( but i’m sure my mom would pay for the treatment if he is positive, i’m just really worried!

it depends
you have to consider what will be best for the puppy, if you cant afford treatment you need to find a way to either make it happen, get a loan from someone else, give the dog away to someone who is willing to care for it so you know it will at least be in good hands, or take it to the humane society (one that is a NO KILL shelter) i wouldnt say put it down because i think plenty of people with money would be willing to save its life<3 good luck!!
Don’t worry. A heart worm test is usually done at 6mths of age if the dog has not been on HW medication. The vet will take a drop of blood and then do the test it is simple. If the test is negative heart worm treatment will be started but if it’s poistive then your dog will be put on a course of medication that will kill the worms, then another HW test will need to be done poss 3-6 months after the medication and if it comes negative then HW medication can be started. I definately would not put him down because of HW if caught in time it is relatively easy to treat. If it’s negative you must HW treat your dog for the rest of his life and this can be done by a HW injection it is a bit expensive but is worth it for piece of mind. Good luck let us know how you go.
why don’t you and your dog do a sponsored walk at school or round your neighbourhood to raise money for the bill. I’m sure everyone will help you. Hope your dog gets better.
my dog had heartworms and it was a 3 stage process with the vet that involved 3 shots. the cost was $500.00 for the treatment. after the 3rd shot, the dog was told to have 30 days rest, NO RUNNING whatsoever. the treatment kills the worms, if there are any, and slowley breaks them up by disolving them. the no running and strick rest is so that a piece of worm will not act like a clot and rush to the heart. after that was cleared up her heart medication runs about $80 a year for interceptor heart worm medication. The treatment was VERY painful for the dog according to my vet. and no, i wouldnt put the dog down. it would be the same as putting my kid down if they had something wrong with them. good luck.
If he tests positive, let me know and I will try to find the organization that helps just dogs with heartworm.
He won’t need to be put down..dogs have much shorter life with heartworm, but he would still have some good years.
The treatment only lasts a few weeks, but then he needs preventative meds for life. (as all dogs do)
First I have a couple of questions
Is your dog in an place where he would get a lot of mosquito bites and have you heard that any of your neighbors dogs have had heart worm?
Mosquitos carry the heartworm egg from one animal into the next.
IF you dog has heartworms and has so far shown no signs then treatment probably would not be very much.
It takes over 6 months of infestation for them to even start to cause even the slightest signs.
Because I live in the midwest and we have winters I do not give the heartworm tablets to my dogs during this time. Then in the Spring I start back up and my Vet does not do another test as the worm would not have had a chance to mature into a problem…. even if he did have them…
Your Vet will work with you money wise.. even tho you may be young you could ask him if there are chores you can do for him in exchange for the heartworm tablets or treatment….
You keep your dog as you are going to be a very loving and good Master to your dog.
Good Luck,
