Puppy Sneezing Snot. What Is Wrong?
Posted by: Alan in Dog Worms Symptoms, tags: Puppy, Sneezing, Snot., What, Wrong
I adopted a puppy from the SPCA last week. He had shots 3 days before I got him, and I took him to my vet the next day, where he had a shot for rabies and was wormed. Since then he has started sneezing, it is mainly clear “snot” which he licks off his nose immediately. He is very playful, and does not have a temperature. I called the vet, they said he could have allergies, but to be sure I would need ot bring him in. I do not want to spend more on another vet visit if I don;t have to. Anyone know if he could just have a cold, or allergies. He has no other symptoms – no coughing, etc. If it is a cold, how long do they last? Any input would be great . I have other dogs and would hate for them all to get sick.

My dog has sneezing fits from time to time.
Some dogs sneeze more just because the way their face and nose is shaped. Look at a lab and a shih-tzu, you’ll see a huge difference. Smaller flatter noses tend to have breathing problems more.

Could be kennel cough, very prevalent in rescued dogs.

If you called the Vet and they did not ask you to bring the dog in I would wait. Not sure what kind of dog you picked up but my Bostons do not have allergies nor are the sick and there are times that the nose runs and yes when they sneeze they blow clear liquid too.

Take him to the vet. He either has kennel cough or respitory infection. Both of those are very dangerous for your dog so I suggest taking him to the vet.

He may have kennel cough, sneezing is a sign this needs to be treated by a vet
contact the spca they should be able to pay for part – all of the cost if you got him in the last 2 weeks, as you should be covered by their insurance, as long *** you bought him as a healthy pup.

I hope you have a written record of what shots he got just before you got him. You do need to keep a record of all his shots, so you need to know all the shots he was given before you got him, and you should have a paper and tag from the rabies.
You said puppy, but not how old. They are supposed to get a 7-way immunization for multiple illnesses every 4 weeks till they are 16 weeks of age, and then annual boosters. They are supposed to get a shot or nasal spray for Kennel Cough and a booster in 6 mo, and then annual boosters. They are supposed to get rabies and then annual boosters for that unless your dog was given the new 3-year rabies vaccine.
You may have to go in in a few weeks for another 7-way immunization, and so, in the meantime, I’d make sure he has lots of water available. I would just keep an eye on him since he doesn’t have a cough or fever. It might be allergies, but if that’s the case, it can wait till the next vet visit for immunizations.
Yes he could have a cold.
Yes he could have allergies.
To test the allergy theory, if you have some over the counter Benedryl, you could break a tablet in half and give him half and see if the sneezing and runny nose get better. Just try this once for now. It’s generally better to not give things without the vet saying it’s ok, but my vet told me I could use Benedryl, so I figure you should be able to do it once safely.
If your other dogs are healthy, they probably wouldn’t pick up a simple cold from a new dog. I wouldn’t expect that to happen.
