What Will De-wormer Do To My Dogs?
Hi! I have two dogs. A 4 month old Chihuahua and a Dachshund that is nearly two years old. My Chihuahua has been acting funny here lately. Diarrhea and not eating as well as she normally does. The vet said she probably had worms and she had me come buy and pick up some de-wormer pills. SHe said it would be best to give them my Dachshund as well since they live together (even though he’s not showing the same symptoms as the Chihuahua). Anyway, she said that the dogs wouldn’t require any extra care after I gave them the pills. But I’ve heard from some coworkers that de-wormer can make dogs really sick. Should I keep them outside for a few hours after I give them the medication or will they be ok in their normal inside environment going outside every 3-4 hours?
Also, I forgot to ask my vet this, (i may call her later and ask her) but I have a cat as well. Should I give him some wormer too? Does it have to be the same vet strength or can the OTC brand work on him?

IN REGARDS TO THE FIRST ANSWER – Your dogs are too old to have Parvo. If you already went to the vet and got the dewormer, you are good to go.
Your animals should not get sick from the wormer. Your cat may need it as well, but call your vet for dosage. It also depends on that types of worms they have whether they can be transferred from one animal to another. Intestinal worms are no big deal and easy to get rid of, so dont fret!
The dog could have ANY disease…and it sounds like the dog has PARVO get him to the vet.
Don’t just give your dog a de-wormer…adn you don’t even know what it will do…you don’t even know if the dog has worms…you could kill it…
–Alf …LOL he just said he had a 4 MONTH OLD DASHUND….Get real…
yes it save to keep them inside and has the mediation have a picture of a cat on there if yes the yh u can give the cat some if not ask the vet good look
If you already got the de-wormer from your vet, then do as she told you to do. De-worming with an appropriate med at an appropriate dosage under the supervision of your vet will cause no problems. I’d take a stool sample in to them from boths dogs in about a week to make sure they’re gone. But since your vet did not actually examine your dog, that may not be the problem. If this problem gets worse or continues after you give pills then take the dogs to the vet asap as there may be something else going on.
You don’t need to keep the dogs outside and do not give this to your cat. Call your vet and ask. Do not use the OTC stuff, it’s dangerous and junk Good luck.
