Your Opinion On Why This Pitbull Puppy Died?

Okay sorry to bother but im a little upset today. In may i adopted a american pitbull puppy, my in laws adopted the brother that was identical to mine. Everything has been great with my puppy, has all his shots and knows tons of tricks. He is absolutely the smartest dog i have ever had, not to forget to mention he is a indoor dog. Now today my sil called me to say that she found her puppy dead! I asked her were there any signs of the pup being sick and she said yes, for a week it had diarhea and lost lots of weight and could not open his mouth to eat or drink water. I figured that he must have been very dehydrated. When we first got the dogs i got my dewormed, in which he had lots of worms and we had to repeat the process twice before they were gone. We told them and they never got the dewormed or vaccinations! They live in some huge home on a oepn field so they have mice and lots of them, do you think the dog ate a mouse or do you think parvo or some sort of disease by the symptoms i told you? Im worried cause a few weeks ago we were evacuated from our home due to the fires in california and had to stay with them for 2 days. I know parvo is contagious, my dog is dog aggressive so we kept them seperated but my pup was in the sectioned off part of the yard that they made for their dog. I really dont want my dog to get whatever he had & im very sad that the dog died…I love animals like you would not believe sad over this. In your opinion what do you think it could have been? Also the pup was about 8 months and he was soooo beautiful… I really think that some people should not own dogs cause if this were my case he would have went to the vet… Sorry to vent on here but none of my little bit of friends care for animals and think im crazy for bein sooo sad..

I would be very careful with your dog since the symptoms sound very much like parvo. Pit Bulls seem to be more susceptible to parvo than other breeds:http://www.petshealth.com/dr_library/par…
Vaccination cannot guarantee 100% immunity according to that link- and parvo is a NASTY nasty virus that you don’t want to chance. Unfortunately it also lives a long time out of the dog’s body….which means the chance of re-infection is high even weeks & months after the infected animal dies. A 30:1 bleach solution will kill it, but if the virus has been on grass or soil, disinfecting becomes more difficult & you’re best to spray off your shoes with bleach before going into your house & yard if you have been at your sister’s place.
Here’s more info on disinfection & prevention of parvohttp://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content…
It is a shame your sister in law didn’t have the sense to care for her dog & get his vaccinations, as it would have likely prevented any sort of disease. I have no way for sure to say it WAS parvo, but given those symptoms I would NOT take chances. Hope this helps.

Your in-laws were not responsible pet owners. YOU have to spend money to keep your animals healthy. Just because your dog had it’s shots you still have too be cautious about visiting infected areas. It can transfer from the dogs feet to your car and home. clean the area your dog soils immediately and always supervise your dog in open country areas.

The symptoms you describe sound very much like parvo. However, if your puppy has had its vaccinations, you should have nothing to worry about, in regards to your dog contracting this disease.

I think that Parvo may have caused the little pup to die. As for your pup, keep a close eye on him. The FIRST sign of anything that you suspect to be bad, you call your vet ASAP!

it might have been parvo, or maybe even the worms could have killed the poor pup. the only way to be 100% sure is through a necropsy.
props to you for taking care of yours!

How could they sit there and watch their dog die? That’s what they did. I’m not going to post what I really think of what they did. UGH!

It probably got a disease. Didn’t she take her dog to the vet when she saw it like that? Or was it already too late?

No way to know for sure but this sounds very much like parvo. It is a common cause of death in puppies, you described the symptoms exactly, the dog was not vaccinated and I am CA also and in my area we are having a parvo outbreak.
If your dog has been fully vaccinated, odds are strong your dog will be OK. They however should not get another puppy for at least six months because the virus persists in the environment for a long time. And they need to vaccinate. Actually, if they did nothing, they should not have a dog at all.

What killed the puppy? The fact that your in-laws didn’t get it vet attention when it became ill. It could have been something quite minor that snowballed, or could have been something major. You just don’t know without a necropsy. Just keep an eye on your dog and if it gets sick, get it into the vet ASAP.

That is awful – some people just really don’t get it, no matter how hard you try to educate them on hat puppies need.
If the body has not already been disposed of, they should have a necropsy done to determine the cause of death – and if you have any doubt in your mind as to whether they have parvo on their place, don’t go there, at all. It can live in the soil for a year!

I think you’re right and that some people should not be allowed to have pets.
If your dog has been vaccinated its unlikely that he’ll come down with parvo. Since he was exposed to an area a dog that probably had worms was in, its likely you’ll need to worm him again.
There’s no way to make a diagnosis of what the dog died of via a computer– but all in all, despite whatever it was that he may have caught– it sounds to me as if he died of neglect.

Hard to know what killed the puppy.
Symtoms may or may not include in Canine Parvovirus
Two forms of CPV have been identified: diarrhea syndrome and cardiac syndrome.
Diarrhea syndrome, or enteritis, has an incubation period of five to fourteen days. Dogs with enteritis act like they are in extreme pain. Early symptoms are depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, high fever, and severe diarrhea. Feces can be either grayish or fluid and bloody. Rapid dehydration is a danger, and dogs may continue to vomit and have diarrhea until they die, usually three days after onset of symptoms. Others may recover without complications and have no long-term problems. Puppies can die suddenly of shock as early as two days into the illness. http://www.essortment.com/all/symptomsca…
Vacination can reduce the chance of being infected, however No vacination is 100% effective in preventing canine diseases or infections.

I would have your puppy checked by a vet and if possible have them check poor Clyde to see why he died. Parvo is highly contagious and while you dog is less likely to get it if he is vaccinated, it is not 100% certain.
If you have a pit bull who is dog aggressive, you MUST do something about it. Way too many innocent dogs and cats get hurt or killed by Pit Bulls. Don’t allow that behavior to continue!
