4 Day Fever That Won’t Go Away! Any Advice?

Ok.. my daughter who is 19 months old.. developed a low grade fever Friday afternoon which continued on till Sunday, when her temp spiked to 103.6. So we took her to the ER and had her checked out, her only other symptom to the fever is a runny nose, clingy, tired all the time, and a little cough. The docs checked her chest (did an xray), they did a catheter to check for UTI, they did blood work and nothing came back with anything… so they said to continue to do motrin/tylenol every four hours like we have been doing. Today is Tuesday and she still has the fever, not quite so high.. but still restless sleep, eating pretty good I would say, and drinking lots of fluid. But she still has a fever that won’t go away. I called our doc.. but she hasn’t gotten back to us yet!!! So what the heck? I’ve tried luke warm baths, I’ve put only a t-shirt on her to run around in, she sleeps with just a sheet, and she still wakes up crying and whimpering. My DH just got home and we found out our puppy we just got has worms… can this be why my daughter might be sick? I’m going to talk to the doc when she calls, but I’m just wondering if this is a cause? She doesn’t really like the dog, so she doesn’t touch him. And if he goes in the house I immediately pick it up and clean the carpet… so what can cause a fever for 4 days and continuing? And why would the docs not give her antibiotics when she is this sick and obviously her body is trying to fight something off??? Sorry.. just a worried mom who never had to do this with my 3 y/o. Any advice would be great… thanks everyone!!

My 3 year old had this same thing last month. It was just a virus, like a cold, that lingered. She ran a fever for several days (up to 104 at one point), and alternating tylenol and motrin kept it down but not gone. She ate well and drank lots, too. It just had to run its course. The doctor checked her for UTI, ear infection, etc., but found nothing.
Antibiotics will not do her any good if she doesn’t have a bacterial infection. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, and may even add to your problems by giving your child diarrhea and upset tummy.
Talk to your doctor about the dog, but I don’t think it is the problem. I’m a worrier, too, so I know how you feel. Perhaps your doctor will want to see her again (if only to ease your mind). Hang in there a couple more days!

did they check for an ear infection? Fever especially in children indictes infection, weather it be urinary, ear, etc. I would make an apointment with your doc, don’t wait for him to call just get her in, and I would mention the worm thing, although unlikely not impossible. Again, fever almost always equals infection in babies, especially one that lasts that long. good luck.

If you suspect a parasite, you might want to head back to the ER/to your doctor and get her checked for worms.
Their tests most likely did not turn up evidence of a bacterial infection, so they would not give her anti-biotics.
Anti-biotics will not help against parasites or viruses, and are not good for one if there is no bacterial infection.

You didn’t get antibiotics because the docs concluded it’s viral & has to “run it’s course”. Keep up the motrin/tylenol and fluid intake.
My 6 yr old had something like that at 19 months. It was scary! It was about 10 days (at least) until she felt better. No antibiotics there either. It was diagnosed as a contagious air-born virus. None of us had it and she wasn’t in daycare.
Here’s a link you can check out until you get a chance to talk to your doctor. ((((Hugs))))http://www.baby-medical-questions-and-an…
