9 Week Old Puppy On Worm Meds Will Not Eat, Has Diarrhea.?
We got a new puppy 1 week ago and took her to the vet 2 days later to make sure everything was OK. (She’s our first dog and we wanted to be extra careful b/c we don’t have much experience with puppies. The vet said she had worms and intestinal parasites. He told us to give her 1 tablet of Drontal Plus and 3 syrnges of marquis (1 per day for 3 days). She didn’t eat very much when we first got her (which is one of the reason we took her to the vet, but since we started her on the meds she stopped eating all together. We gave her boiled chicken and rice twice about 36 and 48 hours ago, she ate it, but didn’t keep it down. We also called the place where we got her from (foster mom) and she said not to worry and make sure she drinks water and has access to food and she’ll be fine… We just want to make sure. We gave her the last dose of her meds last night, so we hope she improves today. She does drink water without a problem. It is Sunday and we plan to take her in tomorrow if she doesn’t improve. Does anyone else know about this or have any experience with these symptoms? She is starting to look frail and we are worried about her. Please help!

well it sounds as if she had a very awful start in life.. you will have to be patient and nurse her back to health… ( neglect in the first few weeks of a pups life is dangerous)
Keep a eye on her and take her back to the vet tomorrow like you are planning to do. You could also fix her some lean Ground beef and drain off excess fat and rinse well in luke warm water and mix with 1 cup cooked rice and give her a tablespoon 3 times a day . That is what I give my dogs if they have a upset tummy because the vet told me to do it. Good luck
Since the worms are located in intestines (most likely the small intestines), your pup has hook worms. Hook worms bite onto the walls of the small intestines and suck out blood and nutrients (eating your dog from the inside).
But this is a dangerous time for your pup not to eat, so that should be your main concern for now. Sometimes warming up her food in the microwave helps increase her appetite. Personally, I would feed her more times a day, but in smaller portions.
Hook worms are known to be vicious and fight back, so one treatment is not always enough. Complete the following: around two weeks after giving your pup its deworming medication, collect her feces and urine samples. Take the samples to the vet for lab work to make sure there are no traces of worms or eggs.
Ask your vet what antidiarrheal medication to give your pup, certain human antidiarrheal medications are OK for puppies and dogs. Also, there is this type of pasty “syrup” you can get from your vet that is given to the pup 30mins-1 hour before feeding that helps for the diarrhea.
Long term diarrhea is dangerous for a puppy because they are not getting all the required nutrients and electrolytes (ex. sodium, potassium, etc.) from the food. Also, it can damage internal organs of your pup that help with digestion if untreated for a longer period of time.
Diarrhea causes dehydration so it’s good that your pup is drinking plenty of water. Allow your pup to drink as much as it wants. But remember, that is not enough. You need to get your pup to eat!!
If your pup likes yogurt, mix a probiotic yogurt in her food from time to time until she gets through this.**
If you are cautious and follow the procedures, your pup will be just fine
