American Pitbull Terrier Making A “dry, Hacking”, Type Cough?
I have a 2 1/2 year old female, pure bred blue-nosed APT. She’s 65 lbs, always been very healthy, current on all vaccines, we give her a heart worm pill every month & she suddenly has been having this dry, hacking cough that started this weekend. Her parents never had any serious conditions and we haven’t taken her to the dog park in a few months. She hasn’t been to any vet offices, groomers, or anything which would include other dogs or animals. She’s been drinking water and her coat’s elasticity seems to be normal. We also have 2 other American Pits that are showing no similar symptoms. She has had a slight dis-intrest in her food but she’s still energetic and seems to be normal. She has a vet appt. on Friday but I was wondering if anybody had a dog with similar symptoms? Or even might know what it is? I have done a little research on it but it could be anything! I’m hoping it’s just allergies but she has never had this before! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a common cold to me, but could also be allergies.
My 3 boxers all got the same cold this past winter, about a week apart from each other. Hacking cough, runny nose, slightly less active, but other than that didn’t seem to affect them…. it lasted less than a week for each one. As soon as one would start to improve, the next one would catch it =P
My blue nose coughs every now and then, but usually its a blade of grass or a piece of bone. If your dog is having a small dislike for her food, then maybe you ought to consider taking her to a vet to avoid any potential diseases or sicknesses from spreading.
Take your dog on a long walk, give her plenty of water and see if her routine goes back to normal. If not, get to a vet. Your call.
i used to have a dog:he used to rip toys apart(or pine cones, wooden sticks)and swallow some pieces.I had to watch him with tennis balls, everything!
He would cough after that.Does your dog enjoy ripping toys apart?
Maybe something scraped her throat(pieces of wood?)
KENNEL COUGH IS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE
Off the top of my head, the first thing I’d say is kennel cough- bordetella is very highly contagious and she could have gotten it anywhere, even if she wasnt near a ton of other dogs. It is a little strange the other dogs don’t have it, but i’ve seen that happen before. It could also be allergies, or she could have injured herself is she pulled too hard on her leash one day… theres just so many options. I think the vets is a good choice
Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!
PS- You can give robbitussin over the counter for dogs- its the same cough syrup the vets use. Call your vet for dosage instructions.
