Why Is My Dog Coughing Up White Foam And Clear Liquid?
My husband and I adopted a dog from the local animal shelter last week. I took him to the vet just for a check up the day after we brought him home. He had hook worms and whip worms. I’ve given him the 3 day treatment for the worms already. He’s eating and drinking normally and doesn’t seem overly tired or lethargic, but late last night he started vomiting/coughing/gagging. He starts with a deep almost chesty cough and gags then throws up a white foam/clear liquid. Every once in a while he also coughs up a thicker mucus almost and his nose runs quite a bit. He’s also breathing a little heavily, but he’s done that for as long as we’ve had him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We’re going to the vet first thing in the morning, but any advice on how I can treat his symptoms temporarily or help make him more comfortable would be great. Any insight as to what this might be would be appreciated as well so we’re not totally unprepared at the dr’s tomorrow. Thanks so much!

Be watchful of dehydration during the night. A few ways to check for dehydration…. touch his gums with your fingers. They should feel wet and slimy as opposed to sticky and tacky. You can also check by pulling (gently) a chunk of his skin upward. It should go back into position immediately… if it goes back into position slowly, that is a sign of dehydration.
If your dog is vomiting profusely and not holding in water and seems dehydrated, take him to a 24-hr emergency vet now. If he is staying hydrated, he can probably wait until morning. Best wishes!
First, glad you are going to the vet ASAP.
Second, it is a GREAT sign that your dog IS eating and drinking normally. For the night, compensate what he is losing by keeping plenty of liquids down him. If you have any Pedialyte or even Chicken Soup … anything just to keep him hydrated is crucial. Regardless of what is wrong with him, most pups, when sick, lose their battle not from what is wrong, but via the dehydration factor that often results. Good Luck!!!
My dog has done that once or twice its gross but they may be sick and havent eat anything lately so he/she doesnt cough up anything but spit and yuck! My dog stopped after the first time and we dont have a clue?
Dog can develope a cough from heavy worm infection, but it sounds like kennel cough from a low imune system. Need antibotics!
My dog did that when she got twisted stomach (gastric torsion) I hope its not that. Caused from eating or drinking too fast.
2 baby asprins might help him they are not harmful to the dogs just make sure there baby asprin not the regular adult kind
The foamy part of the vomit probably isn’t anything to worry too much about. As liquids come out of dogs via gagging/hacking, many times they appear foamy. Since he’s eating and drinking normally, he probably isn’t in too much pain, besides when he vomits. It could be a side effect from the treatment for the worms but only a vet will be able to tell you why your dog is vomiting. Eating grass will also cause dogs to vomit.
In some dogs, a runny nose is normal. Check to makes sure the nose run isn’t green or has blood in it as these are signs of possible upper respiratory infection. Sneezing is another sign of a respiratory infection.
Some key things to check are his drinking. If your dog seems to be drinking excess amounts of water, this is usually an indicator of a larger problem. Also it’s handy to have a rectal thermometer. A dog’s body temperature is 101 to 102. If he has a temp of 103 or higher, this is another indicator that something serious might be wrong.
