My Dog Just Ate Some Nasty Stray Cat Feces. What Should I Do?

He ate a little of it before I even knew what he was doing. There are a lot of stray cats around here and I’m concerned that he’ll get worms from it. He is on Heartgard, of course, but that doesn’t cover all types of worms. Should I have him fecal tested right away, or just look for symptoms? I think some types of intestinal worms don’t have symptoms though, right? I’m confused.

It is possible to get worms from consuming feces, but getting him tested right away would be inconclusive, unless he had already picked up the worms from a previous snack. It would take a few days for the worms to get into his system and start showing in a fecal sample.
If you are concerned, talk to your vet about a prophylactic worming treatment for your dog. It won’t hurt him and it will bring you some piece of mind.
As far as the kitty snacks go… it’s just all part of being a dog.
Kitty tootsie rolls are a favorite food for dogs. My lab is a connoisseur of deer doodie, goose goo, and kitty crapp. I don’t think it does her much harm, but I do try to discourage it with food-rewarded recalls. To be honest, all I do with her is monthly Frontline Plus and heartworm medicine plus annual physicals at the vet, including blood tests for parasites.
Get some tapeworm meds from the vet, probably. Other than that the Heartgard should cover it. Tapeworms are going to be the likely issue from the stray cat.
Either way, don’t run out and do a fecal right away because you’ll likely get a false negative even if he does have worms.
Yuck. My dog has done this before too though and we live in a wooded neighborhood but they’ve never gotten hurt…
I would look for anything wrong, of course. If your real scared just call your vet
I would mention it in your next check-up.
But first, don’t let the dog give you any kisses until they get a big drink of water! lol
Dogs will do this whenever given the opportunity. He’s probably done it when you haven’t known about it. Make him get a big drink of water and get a worm test with your next check-up or if you see symptoms or worms. Chances are he’s disgusting but fine.
Call you Vet and ask these questions
we are not vets here, and sometimes People just get plain mean when answering,
I would call my Vet,they know whats in the area in reguards to what your pet can catch
I live 60km From Toronto and toronto has twice the rate of heartworm
so every area is different even with strays…
Don’t let him lick you in the face. If you’re truely worried about parasites, you can collect a fecal sample in about 3 weeks for analysis.
hiya!

but the gud news is dat u dnt needa wrry bout t at all.
